Chapter Nineteen
Jerin was sure heâd suffered a concussion from the blow to his head. Yet, after two days on his back, he defied the Healer, and his wife, by getting up and moving around. He had to take things slow. The dizziness practically knocked him off his feet at times. Carah was his constant companion, not that he minded. He only wished that Issah had fixed his head during his visit, instead of leaving him to mend on his own.
âYou take this time to rest, Jerin,â Issah had ordered the day heâd stopped in to visit before leaving for Aloblase. âEverybody needs times to collect themselves and regain their strength. When you constantly run on full steam, youâll soon burn out and begin to make grave errors. Iâm sure General Marcelâs training taught you this?â
âYes sir, butââ
Issah held up his hand. âNo. I said rest. Everything is being taken care of. You are not the only one here who can accomplish things.â Heâd rested his palm on Jerinâs forehead, causing him to go into a deep slumber which lasted nearly twelve hours.
When he awakened, Katrina filled him in on the Wilderland battle. She held her Ledge-o-graph to her chest as she sat beside his bed in the chambers he shared with Carah. If he had to rest, he wanted to be in his own room on a cushioned bed that didnât dig into his back as the cot had.
âWhat?â His eyes narrowed on Katrina in suspicion.
Carah moved about the room, listening to their discussion which sheâd already heard during the council meeting, a knowing smile on her face.
Katrina seemed hesitant to tell him her news, which set his nerves on edge. She cleared her throat, then stammered, âWell, itâs.... But first off, you should know Tarekâs father was killed in the battle. Alyra wrote that heâs been quite brokenhearted about that.â
âWasnât it his father who kidnapped the kid?â Jerin shifted his pillows so he could sit up better. His head swam for a moment, but it quickly passed.
Katrina nodded, but Carah spoke up, âStill his father, Jere.â
Jerin fought the urge to give a derisive snort. The ladâs family didnât seem like a nice lot. But still, he supposed a period of grieving was understandable. âThereâs more. I can tell by the way youâre biting your lip, Kat. Spill it.â He didnât mean for his voice to come out in a growl, but he suspected he was about to get news he wouldnât like.
âWell, the good news is he and Alyra are definitely bringing the Curians back home.â She smiled, but still, her brows pinched in what heâd dubbed her worry line. âHer brother is accompanying her. Iâm still waiting to see if Ethan and Lotari will be able to gather the support of the creatures to come help us.â
âWill Lotari and Stitch come?â he asked, eager to see his centaur friends again. Lot and that rascal Stitch would actually be great assets. And if the Illuminate, Tarek, fought as well, theyâd be more likely to clear the filth from Denovo in no time.
